It takes courage to dig in; it’s that very courage that leads to healing and growth.

Welcome — I'm Dr. Allen

I help adults who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected find relief, clarity, and renewed energy for life.

Many of the people I work with are navigating anxiety, perfectionism, trauma, or patterns around food and body image that no longer feel healthy. Others come to therapy because they're burnt out—often in helping roles themselves—and need space to reconnect with who they are, not just what they do.

My approach is collaborative, respectful, and grounded in your strengths. Together, we’ll work at a pace that feels right—supporting both deep healing and practical change.

Testimonials

“Tom helped me actually connect to my feelings-to even know what they were, which sounds weird to say, but I didn’t even know some of my feelings. I was acting them out or letting them come out of me but I wasn’t really aware of them” (Former Client).

“Tom was patient, compassionate, and supportive. He encouraged new ways of looking at problems and encouraged me to speak up for myself more” (Former Client).

Approach & Training

  • Licensed Psychologist (LP #6500) in the state of Minnesota, and I am also authorized to practice under the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PsyPact). I am a Level II certified AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) psychologist and Level I EMDR trained psychologist.

  • About Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

AEDP is a transformative approach to psychotherapy that emphasizes healing through accessing and processing emotions in a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. We will work together to explore your emotional experiences, cultivate resilience, and foster your innate capacity for healing and growth. AEDP focuses on identifying and transforming defensive patterns that may be hindering your well-being and accessing core affective experiences. This approach is designed to help you connect with your authentic self and build a more fulfilling life.

In AEDP, we will pay close attention to moment-to-moment experiences and track shifts in your emotions and physical sensations. We will work to create a safe environment where you can explore difficult emotions, access your strengths, and experience transformative moments. My role is to support you in accessing and processing your emotions, facilitating healing and growth.

  • Interpersonal and Somatic-Based Therapy Approaches

In our work together, I draw on both interpersonal and somatic-based approaches. These methods help us explore how your past and present relationships—and the way your body holds emotional experience—can shape your mental health.

    Interpersonal Approach:

This means we pay attention to how you relate to others and how past relationships may be influencing your current emotions, patterns, or struggles. Together, we’ll look at how your connections—whether supportive or painful—have shaped your sense of self. Therapy becomes a place to build healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.

    Somatic-Based Approach:

“Somatic” simply means body-based. These methods recognize that we don’t just experience stress or trauma in our minds—we often feel it in our bodies, too. Using gentle awareness, breathwork, or other grounding tools, we help your nervous system move from survival mode (like anxiety or shutdown) into a place of greater calm and connection. You don’t need to have the “right” words—sometimes we just listen to what your body is telling us.

    Why These Approaches Matter:

    • They help deepen insight beyond just “talking about it”

    • You learn to regulate emotions in the moment, not just after the fact

    • Healing can occur both in relationships and in the body

These approaches are especially helpful for those who’ve experienced trauma, anxiety, or chronic stress—and want more than surface-level coping.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma and other distressing life experiences. It’s especially effective for treating PTSD, anxiety, and past experiences that still feel “stuck” or overwhelming.

Instead of talking in detail about the trauma, EMDR uses a structured process that includes bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones) to help the brain reprocess painful memories. This allows the emotional charge of those memories to fade, so they no longer feel as intense or disruptive.

  • ERP is the gold-standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It’s a type of therapy that helps you face the fears and intrusive thoughts that OCD brings—without doing the compulsions or rituals that usually follow.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Exposure means gradually and safely confronting the thoughts, images, objects, or situations that trigger your anxiety.

    • Response Prevention means resisting the urge to do the compulsions (like checking, washing, or seeking reassurance) that temporarily reduce your anxiety—but actually keep OCD going long-term.

Over time, your brain learns that the feared outcomes are either very unlikely or not dangerous at all. The anxiety starts to go down naturally, and OCD loses its grip.

    What Clients Often Notice:

    • Intrusive thoughts become less frequent and less upsetting

    • Anxiety fades more quickly without needing to do rituals

    • Confidence grows in handling uncertainty and fear

ERP doesn’t mean throwing you into your biggest fears on day one. It’s a step-by-step process, and you’re always in control of the pace. You’ll be supported every step of the way.
